[Session#11 Kazakhstan Visit Debriefing]
Date: Sep 25, 2023
We held a debriefing session on the visit to Kazakhstan as Session#11!
For about a week from August 25 to September 1, coordinator Keita Takagaki went to the city of Semey in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Semey is the former name of "Semipalatinsk. You may have heard of its name. The town where he stayed is about 150 km away from the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (commonly known as "Polygon"), where 456 nuclear tests were conducted by the former Soviet Union. The total number of nuclear tests conducted by the Soviet Union is estimated to be 715 (586 in Kazakhstan), most of which were conducted in Semipalatinsk.
This time, He accompanied the Hiroshima-Semipalatinsk Project, which has been providing medical assistance to the area from Hiroshima since its establishment in 1998. We participated in various activities, including attending an international conference held by Semey Medical University, which has been involved in the treatment of victims of nuclear tests, visiting a pediatric hospital, and attending a memorial peace ceremony on August 29, the day the nuclear tests began in Semipalatinsk and the test site was closed. At the debriefing session, we invited Ms. Riri Sanger, a first-year student at Kyoto City University of Arts, who visited the site with us, to reflect on what she saw, heard, and felt there.
We hope that this will be an opportunity to think together about the damage caused by the nuclear tests in Kazakhstan and Semipalatinsk!
